Curtains Open

What happens when she refuses to close the blinds and you are too far gone to care.

She left every light on.
The city watched.

The Setup

We had barely made it inside. She walked straight to the switch and turned every lamp on. Then she looked at me, smiling, and said the blinds stay open.

Directly across the street stood an entire wall of condominium windows. Some dark, some glowing. It didn’t matter to her. She wanted to be seen.

The Hours

We went slowly at first, then not slowly at all. Hours passed. The kind of hours where time stops mattering and everything becomes skin and breath and the occasional distant flicker of movement behind glass across the avenue.

I kept waiting for the moment I would feel self-conscious. It never arrived.

Being wanted that completely makes everything else irrelevant. The city could have been empty or full; it felt the same.

Sometimes the most intimate thing you can do is refuse to hide. We stayed in that bright room until the sky began to pale and the windows across the street started turning off one by one.
