A private circle for those who keep the curtains drawn in company and open the windows only when the house is empty.

Quiet by day.
Alive at dusk.

We are mothers, librarians, bank clerks and school governors. In the presence of family we are the picture of modesty. When the front door closes and the last car pulls away, the robe drops.

Our meetings are conducted by post. Members share the small rituals that bring both shame and relief: the slow retrieval of a dropped handkerchief, the careful arrangement of houseplants on a windowsill, the long afternoon spent reading on the sofa with every blind raised.

Anonymous accounts

Mrs. H, Surrey • 1996

“I now keep a small wooden bowl on the sideboard. When I am alone I drop my reading glasses into it, turn, and retrieve them slowly. The street is only twenty feet away.”

Mr. L, Edinburgh • 1995

“My wife believes I am shy. She would never guess that the moment she leaves for her Wednesday bridge club I move the armchair six inches closer to the glass.”

The Couch Protocol

Our only rule is discretion. Members are encouraged to describe, never demonstrate. We exchange letters describing posture, angle of light, and the precise moment one becomes aware of being potentially observed. No photographs are exchanged. No names.
